A disease is something that makes a person sick. Today scientists and doctors know that there are three things that cause the spread of diseases: personal hygiene, heredity, and the environment. 

Early doctors did not attend medical school and had to guess what was wrong with their patients. The discovery of bacteria and vaccines helped doctors understand medicine and disease. Many diseases that were common in the past are no longer threats today due to advances in medicine. Diseases that still affect people today include influenza, heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and cancer.

Air pollution is an environmental hazard that can cause disease or aggravate diseases people already have. Ground-level ozone, also known as smog, is especially dangerous. Stress from a person's environment can lead to anxiety disorders or depression. Reducing stress, relaxing the body, and eating nutritious foods are all important actions in disease prevention.
